3 Signs that Your Roof May be Leaking

While large roof leaks may be easy to detect, smaller leaks often go unnoticed but can still wreak havoc on your home. An overlooked small leak can turn into a serious leak later on and lead to costly damage. To avoid damage from roof leaks, it's recommended to get a professional roof inspection at least twice a year, so that any issues are detected and repaired before they spiral out of control. Until your next inspection, here are some warning signs of roof damage to look out for from the roofing experts at TAMKO Building Products.

1. Water spots and stains. Water spots and stains on the ceilings or exterior walls may suggest your roof is leaking. Sometimes water stains are noticeable, but if they arise in dark corners they can be difficult to see. If you see any signs of discoloration on your walls or ceilings, examine them more closely for other signs of a leak, such as moisture and mold. Also inspect the roofline, as this could signify problems with the flashing.

2. Missing or damaged shingles. Missing, curled, or buckled shingles suggest there are problems with your roofing material that make it more susceptible to leaks. Even if you haven’t noticed water leaking inside your home, there could be a small leak in the crawl space or attic. If you spot any damage to your roofing shingles, contact your roofing technician.

3.  Clogged gutters and downspouts. Rain gutters and downspouts cannot adequately move rain water off your roof if they are clogged with debris. An accumulation of leaves, branches and other debris can cause the water to flow back into the gutter causing it to overflow and water to leak into your home. This problem can be averted by keeping your gutters and downspouts clear.

With these tips from TAMKO Building Products, you can help protect your home from roof leaks. If you suspect a leak or another form of roof damage, contact your roofing technician right away. Fixing the problem before it gets out of hand can save you a lot of money down the road.
